Pilot Countries
Emerging Country Selection
In many emerging countries, the poor and vulnerable have a much higher risk of chronic illness, a 20 year difference in healthy life expectancy, and a 10-fold difference in premature CVD compared to higher socioeconomic groups.
Thus, by targeting poor and vulnerable patients, PROJECT GLOBE’s IM-Cardio© Program could be expected to help close the health care quality and outcomes gap between socioeconomic levels. In addition to patient health benefits IM-Cardio© is expected to have economic benefits by helping to reduce health care costs and to increase productivity at local and national levels.
Based on country specific data confirming high chronic disease morbidity and mortality and preliminary studies conducted in Spain and Colombia, Project Globe selected Venezuela and Russia as its first two countries to demonstrate the effectiveness of its CPD program to improve chronic disease (CVD) treatment, and to control CVD risk factors.
Initial country selection was also based on familiarity with the strength of interested countries’ leadership and the ability of that leadership to assemble a local team committed to Project Globe’s goals and the idea that combining local and global resources was an efficient way to achieve sustainable improvements in cardiovascular heath and quality of care.
Initially, this program, being pilot tested in the Russian Federation and in Venezuela, will train 150 doctors and have an impact on the lives of 3,000 patients and members of their families. The program will be presented using a traditional classroom format in Russia and a blended online/face-to-face format in Venezuela. Follow-up training will be on-going and substantial to help ensure optimal patient care, satisfaction and improved clinical outcomes.
