David A. Davis

Dave Davis is a Professor in the Departments of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation and Family and Community Medicine, and Associate Dean, Continuing Education (CE), Faculty of Medicine, the University of Toronto. He is also chair of the Guidelines Advisory Committee of the Ontario Medical Association and the Ministry of Health, Ontario.

Completing his medical training at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto in 1969, Dave entered private family practice in Burlington, Ontario and began a life-long interest in continuing medical education (CME). This interest culminated in the development of a community hospital-based continuing education program at Burlington's Joseph Brant Hospital, and his appointment, in 1977, as Director of CME at the new Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University in Hamilton.

His interests at McMaster led to several academic continuing education developments. These include the concept of a CME society membership; the application of problem-based learning principles to CME; a comprehensive competency assessment program supported by the provincial licensing body; a Ministry of Health funded national audioconferencing network; the use of innovative needs assessment and evaluative techniques, including standardized patients; a unique data base of CE research, called the 'Research and Development Resource Base in CME; and the evolution of an evidence-based CE working group. Along with members of this group, Dave has received, as principle or co-principal investigator, or study team member, over $4,000,000 in grant support, testing and evaluating concepts and innovations such as those described above, related to physician performance change and adult learning.

In 1986, Dave became the chair of Continuing Health Sciences Education and clinical professor, Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University. In 1989, leaving his Burlington practice, he joined the full time staff of the Faculty of Health Sciences of McMaster University, and became a staff physician at the North Hamilton Community Health Center, an inner-city primary care teaching practice.

In 1994, Dave joined the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto as Associate Dean for Continuing Education. He is an active staff physician in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto. He has authored nearly 100 articles, monographs and chapters, and co-edited a text on CME, the Physician as Learner. He has been a speaker, workshop leader and consultant on four continents.

Finally, Dave has served as chair of the CME Committee of the Ontario Council of the Faculties of Medicine; president of the Standing Committee on CME for the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges; the president of the Alliance for CME, the largest organization of CME providers in the US and Canada; and the president of the Society of Medical College Directors of CME, a North American organization of medical school deans and directors of CME), now called the Society for Academic CME.
